Red Bull Studios Commissioned Miran to create a concept, source stores in multiple languages and locations and shoot a global film serious around a simple premise: Human empathy is a natural, infinitely renewable resource.
Our solution was I am The Engine. A ten-part series shot in ten countries - from Rwanda to Los Angeles and Brazil to Indonesia - looking at the lives of ten individuals and the organisations they represent.
The ambitious series started in South Africa where townships are drowning in violence - following the members of Waves for Change - an NGO that is trying to use the power of the sea to bring back Cape Towns gang members from the brink of death or a lifetime in the prison system. Through access to safe spaces, caring mentors, and a provision of weekly Surf Therapy sessions, W4C gives children skills to cope with stress, regulate behaviour, build healing relationships, and make positive life choices. Bringing children on the verge of gang life from the townships to the coast where surfing lessons offer a potential respite from the violence of their lives.
